Just as the waves of a pond ripple outward when a stone is dropped in it, such are the effects of the decisions we make. The bigger the stone, the bigger the waves; the bigger the decision, the bigger the effects. These effects ripple outward and touch everyone that is in our lives or has ever been in our lives.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is the oldest movie that I can remember, if not one of the first, that touched on the idea of suicide. James Stewart stars as George Baily, a business man literally on the brink of ending it all. We see him on the edge of a bridge, getting ready to jump, when an angel named Clarence is sent down to stop him. Clarence shows George what life would be like without him in it. George comes to his senses and realizes that ending his own life is not an option. This is a wonderful movie about choices, second chances, and redemption, for both George and Clarence (“Teacher says, every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings”).
I wish we all had an angel like Clarence that could show us the world without us in it. I can guarantee that everyone would make the same decision George did. There are multiple people, friends, family, loved ones, that would be greatly affected by you not being in their lives.
The choices we make effect everyone around us. This past week, close friends of our family suffered the loss of one of their children. This young blood, this child, made the decision that his family would be better off without him. He took his own life. I was devastated when I heard the news. I wasn’t as close to the family as my wife was, but it broke my heart. The choices we make effect everyone around us.
To those of you reading this remember, suicide is never the answer. I will say it again: SUICIDE IS NEVER THE ANSWER!! Please, please take that to heart. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If you ever feel that way, talk to someone, please. I implore everyone reading this, pass this on. The choices we make effect everyone around us.
