Just as the waves of a pond ripple outward when a stone is dropped in it, such are the effects of the decisions we make. The bigger the stone, the bigger the waves; the bigger the decision, the bigger the effects. These effects ripple outward and touch everyone that is in our lives or has ever been in our lives.
Trying to wrap my head around why or how someone could feel so alone, lost, confused, scared, threatened; to turn to such a drastic decision without thinking there was at least one person they had in their corner to turn to.
The technology they said would bring us closet, has irrevocably changed our worlds forever, and sometimes not in a positive way. It has opened up a whole new platform to resemble the life we live. Everything that happens in life, happens at such a greater value online. We’ve isolated ourselves to such a degree with slogans like “trust no one”, that we forget the power of a simple smile to a stranger and what that small gesture can do for someone. The rippling effect of one person smiling transforms into that person holding the door for the next, and so on. We’ve all lost our concern and care for the common stranger.
I am reminded of my stepfather and his own suicide. I wonder why a man with a wonderful wife and children would think he had no one who would understand why he felt that was a way out, when any of us would have made him understand.
It is never an option. It is an emotional decision that can never be undone. The people left after are the ones who suffer and the pain is passed on. The cycle continues and never stops.
